The Phoenix Mercury and the Chicago Sky delivered an overtime thriller in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals and Twitter was losing its collective mind.
After the Chicago Sky took Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on the road, the Phoenix Mercury knew they had to have a big answer in Game 2 on Wednesday night. With some in-town basketball stars like Chris Paul, Devin Booker and Jay Crowder attending the game, you knew Diana Taurasi and Mercury were set to put on a show.
He actually did this. In the back-and-forth case, Phoenix took the game in hand, but a missed free throw allowed Skye to receive a game-tying bucket before the ball was forced into overtime.
In the extra frames, however, things got even more crazy. Mercury again took another lead but trading late could have turned the tide. Instead, Taurasi steals a clutch, kept the ball from going out of bounds (at least, as the referees call it), and established a crucial possession. Skylar Diggins-Smith then delivered the dagger, hitting her defender with a dribble and taking her to the rack.
The ensuing capture of Chicago was fruitless and Phoenix was able to tie a best-of-5 series in one game. And as you’d expect, everyone was discussing that wild finish.
Twitter marveled at the spectacular mercury-sky finish in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals
Most importantly, a message to those who weren’t watching the great game.
Seriously, if you’re not tuning into these great WNBA finals, this is your problem you need to solve. This is an absolutely great game.
